Development of Fine Motor Skills and Hand-Eye Coordination

Strong fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination play an important part in allowing your child to reach essential developmental milestones and achieve success within the classroom setting. Our preschool curriculum provides children with the necessary opportunities to gain and improve valuable fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, through a variety of activities.

Children will have the opportunity to perform and fine tune a wide range of tasks that improve the coordination of the small muscles of their hands and the connection between their hands and eyes, such as :

  • Creating towers and objects with blocks
  • Holding and manipulating a variety of props during dramatic play
  • Learning to hold pencils and other writing and drawing implements with a firm, mature grasp
  • Drawing a variety of shapes with controlled, stable movements
  • Learning to color within lines
  • Learning to use child-safety scissors properly
  • Learning to grasp and move a variety of math and science manipulatives
  • Learning to hold and use a variety of child-safe cooking implements and eating tools like spoons and forks
  • Engaging in art and creative play activities like rolling, kneading and shaping modelling dough
  • Learning to successfully put on, button and fasten clothing items
  • Using their hands and eyes to toss, catch, roll and push objects during play

These and many other activities are incorporated into preschoolers’ learning and playtime, ensuring that they are constantly improving their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination levels and are well-prepared for the challenges presented in kindergarten and beyond.
